Questions to ask before hiring a cleaning contractor
Before you sign with a cleaning contractor, ask enough to know who holds the licence, what you are paying for and what happens when something goes wrong. Ask for the answers in writing, and check that the contract says the same thing.

Ask the same questions to every supplier you are considering, so you can put the answers side by side. Each one covers a point that is easy to leave unsaid: who buys the materials, what happens on a day a cleaner is missing, how the hours are changed. Asking now puts each of them on the table before you sign.
The questions
- Are you licensed, by which authority and since when? Ask to see the trade licence.
- What exactly do you supply: cleaning staff only, or other services too?
- Is it an annual contract, and how often do you invoice?
- How many cleaners will we get, for how many hours and days, and are they full time?
- Can you supply both men and women?
- Who supplies the cleaning materials and equipment? Can you price the staff only if we buy our own?
- Do the staff come in uniform?
- If a cleaner is absent, who do we contact and what happens?
- What is included in the price, and what would cost extra?
- How do we add cleaners or change the hours during the year?
- Who is our contact for day-to-day problems?
- How is the contract renewed or ended?
How to judge the answers
Clear, specific answers are a good sign. Be careful with a price given before the supplier knows your site, a scope that only says "general cleaning", or a promise that is not written in the contract. If a supplier cannot answer a question now, ask when they will, and ask for that answer in writing too. Our contract checklist shows where each answer should appear in the contract.
